The Young Canberra Citizen of the Year Awards (the Awards) is an annual celebration that was established in 1989. These Awards recognise individuals and groups of young people aged between 12 to 25 years who have made a significant contribution through their personal endeavours, or who have been actively involved in the ACT community in areas such as community work, sport, education, Science, culture, the arts or the environment.
The Awards also seek to acknowledge and celebrate significant personal achievements of individual young people.
Nominations can be submitted in the following seven categories:

The Awards are supported by the ACT Government and our generous sponsors, who are committed to recognising the diversity and talent of individuals and groups from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences.
The Award winner for the 2020 Young Canberra Citizens of the Year category will be presented with prize money of $2,000 thanks to our sponors. Winners in all other categories will each receive a prize to the value of $1,000, thanks to the sponsor of each category.
The Youth Engagement Team, will work with the young people who win an award to provide opportunities for them to participate in community events, speak to relevant community groups, address groups and / or officiate at special occasions.
Nominations will open on Monday, 2 December 2019 and close midday, Monday, 2 March 2020.

An independent selection panel comprising of representatives with relevant expertise in each category will be convened by the ACT Youth InterACT Team to assess the nominations.
The Young Canberra Citizens of the Year Awards will be presented by the Minister for Children, Youth and Families at an awards ceremony during Youth Week 2020.
Young Canberra Citizen of the Year Award
This category recognises a young person aged 12 to 25 who has made an outstanding contribution to their local community that has significantly contributed to the broader ACT community, through activities such as charity work, volunteering, developing and implementing new opportunities and/or service for young people in the ACT.

Young Achiever Award
This category recognises a young person aged 12 to 15 that has made a contribution to their local community through charity or voluntary work.
Personal Achievement Award
This category recognises an individual who, has overcome adversity to achieve their life goals (such as issues related to family, culture, health or disability), has made an important contribution to society and is an inspirational role model to others.
Individual Community Service Award
This category recognises young people who are working in the community sector, volunteering and / or social entrepreneurs, who are dedicated to the needs of others and seek innovative solutions to address social issues.
Group Achievement Award
This category recognises a group of young people who have worked together to provide a service, program or project, which as resulted in positive, youth-led changes in the ACT community.

Environment and Sustainability Award
This category recognises an individual and/or group of young people contributing to the community through innovation and sustainability.

Arts and Multimedia Award
This category recognises a group or young person who has demonstrated initiative, innovation and made a postive community contribution through multimedia/ social media, visual arts, performing arts, technical support, or music.
