2019 Canberra Young Citizen of the Year Awards

Information before you start

 

The Young Canberra Citizen of the Year Awards is an annual celebration that was established in 1989. These Awards recognise individuals and groups of young people aged between 12 and 25 years who have made a significant contribution through their personal endeavours, or who have been actively involved in the ACT community in areas such as community work, sport, education, science, culture, the arts or the environment. The Awards also seek to acknowledge and celebrate significant personal achievements of individual young people.

Nominations are open to individuals and groups of young people aged between 12 and 25 years who reside and/or study in the ACT.

Young people can be nominated in the following categories:

  • Young Canberra Citizen of the Year
  • Personal Achievement Award
  • Individual Community Service Award
  • Group Achievement Award
  • Arts and Multimedia Award
  • Environment and Sustainability Award

All nominees will be notified of their nomination in March 2019.

Nominations close 12:00pm (Midday), Monday, 18 March 2019

  • An individual and/or group can be nominated for more than one category. Please make sure you clearly indicate the award categories you are submitting a nomination in.
  • You can provide additional supporting material to strengthen the application – please feel free to share as much information as you can.
  • It may be useful to provide a copy of the nomination form to the referees you have listed as the selection panel may need to contact them.

Category Information

 

Young Canberra Citizen of the Year Award

This category recognises an individual who :

  • is an exceptional role model; and/or  
  • has championed the values of youth issues in the ACT; and/or
  • has significantly contributed to the ACT through personal efforts or being actively involved in the community.

 

Personal Achievement Award

This category recognises an individual who :

  • has overcome adversity to achieve their life goals; and or
  • has shown exceptional commitment to achieving their goals; and/or
  • has championed the values of young people and/or a youth focussed organisation in the ACT community in their chosen field such as the arts; environment and sustainability; sport or community development.

 

Individual Community Service Award

This category recognises an individual who :

  • has made a significant contribution to the promotion of community services in the ACT; and/or
  • has championed and demonstrated the values of volunteering and community services in the ACT; and/or
  • has shown exceptional commitment to ACT youth community services.

 

Group Achievement Award

This category recognises a group of young people that has contributed to the broader ACT community, through activities such as volunteering, developing and implementing new opportunities and/or service for young people in the ACT.

 

Environment and Sustainability Award

This category recognises an individual and/or group of young people who:

  • have made an invaluable contribution in protecting, conserving, rehabilitating or sustaining our unique environment and achieving a more sustainable ACT; and/or
  • promote the development and benefits of environmentally responsible behaviour; and/or
  • have contributed towards a cleaner, greener, Canberra; and/or
  • have affected positive change at a local level.

 

Arts and Multimedia Award

This category recognises an outstanding young creative individual and/or group of young people who:

  • have excelled in the Arts, and/or
  • have shown best practice in utilising art/ multimedia/ social media to promote and express youth issues in the ACT; and/or
  • have used art/multimedia to empower and inspire young people in the ACT; and/or
  • have used or created social media platforms that inspire or empower young people.
