ABOUT THE 2026-2028 TERM FOR THE ACT RECONCILIATION COUNCIL
The ACT Reconciliation Council is an advisory body that supports and advises the ACT Government on advancing reconciliation in the Australian Capital Territory. Established following the introduction of the ACT Reconciliation Day public holiday, the Council plays a place‑based leadership role in promoting reconciliation throughout the year across the ACT community.
The Council provides informed, community‑grounded advice to the Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs, supports the planning and delivery of the annual ACT Reconciliation Day public holiday and associated activities, and promotes reconciliation through engagement, education, advocacy and leadership aligned with the five dimensions of reconciliation.
Goals and Objectives
The ACT Reconciliation Council aims to:
- Provide strategic, community‑informed advice on reconciliation priorities, opportunities and emerging issues in the ACT.
- Promote understanding, respect and positive relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, government and the broader ACT community.
- Support culturally safe engagement and ways of working that respect and promote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander self‑determination.
- Engage with community members, stakeholders and sectors to strengthen reconciliation outcomes across the ACT.
- Support the planning and delivery of the annual ACT Reconciliation Day public holiday and associated activities that foster connection, reflection and unity.
ABOUT THE ACT RECONCILIATION COUNCIL RECRUITMENT (2026 -2028)
This recruitment round aims to fill up to 6 vacancies on the ACT Reconciliation Council, including Co-Chairs and Members roles, for the next Council term commencing in November 2026.
The recruitment process will follow a fair and merit-based approach and seek to strengthen the collective skills and experience and perspectives of the Council, while ensuring membership reflects the diversity of the ACT community.
WHO SHOULD APPLY
The ACT Reconciliation Council welcomes applications from people who are committed to advancing reconciliation in the Australian Capital Territory and who can contribute thoughtful, informed and community‑grounded advice to government.
We encourage applications from individuals who:
- Demonstrate a strong understanding of reconciliation and its importance in the ACT, including a commitment to strengthening respectful relationships and supporting the self‑determination of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
- Have authentic connections with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities and/or the broader ACT community, and can engage in culturally safe, respectful and ethical ways.
- Bring lived experience, professional experience or community knowledge that can support the Council’s role in promoting reconciliation across the ACT community, aligned with the five dimensions of reconciliation.
- Have experience contributing constructively to boards, committees, advisory groups or other collective decision‑making processes, and are able to work collaboratively to provide informed advice.
- Can communicate clearly and respectfully across diverse communities, sectors and perspectives, and contribute to productive, consensus‑focused discussions.
- Are willing and able to actively participate in Council meetings and activities, uphold governance, confidentiality and conflict of interest requirements, and model the Council’s Ways of Working.
Membership of the Council seeks to reflect the diversity of the ACT community. Applications are encouraged from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people from a range of cultural backgrounds, ages and life experiences, people with disability, LGBTIQA+ people, and individuals from across different sectors and regions of the ACT.
Applicants must be ACT residents, work, study or volunteer in the ACT, or otherwise demonstrate a strong connection and commitment to the ACT community. Members are appointed as individuals, not as representatives of organisations.
INDEPENDENT ASSESSMENT PANEL
All applications will be assessed by an independent assessment panel. This panel will assess applications against the selection criteria and provide recommendations to the Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs, who is responsible for appointing members to the Council.
